Greg Kearns, patuxent river park naturalist

On the Patuxent River, Greg Kearns is leading a long-time effort to increase breeding ospreys. Due to the lack of old-growth forests, sturdy dead trees are hard to come by. Most natural nests fail after the first summer storm. Greg’s study now includes about 200 platforms, these platforms have made the Patuxent River a hotspot for breeding ospreys. I help Greg band chicks every summer to track their breeding patterns, migration, and productivity.
